Is it possible to make a retro phone handset plug into a cell phone?

I have an iPhone, and I saw this:

and I thought it was an awesome idea, and then I got the idea of making one myself. How would I go about doing that? I was thinking maybe I could buy a plug in speaker or something and an old phone and maybe splice the wires together? Would that work? What are some of your ideas?
