System Ksu

Should You Invest in a PBX or KSU Phone System?

After the demarcation point in telephony, the telephone company’s network connects with the lines of the business. This is when ownership of the phone system transfers from the phone company to the business owner. Since ownership is transferred at this point, it is the business owner’s responsibility to acquire a phone installer and determine which phone system best fits his company.

There are two major types of phone systems that you will have to consider purchasing for your small or medium size business: a private branch exchange (PBX) or a key system unit (KSU). These systems each have their differences meaning one might be better suited for your business than the other.

The PBX phone system is the most commonly used phone system due to its easy usability for larger, and sometimes smaller, businesses and because each person doesn’t have to be connected to an external phone line. The PBX phone system allows users to share a certain number of outside lines and automatically selects those outgoing lines for you rather than you manually doing it. You are most likely dealing with a PBX phone system if you call an information line for a business and are automatically directed to multiple extensions within the business. A PBX phone system also makes internal calling much easier with simple extension dialing.

If you need a phone system that will support your company in the long run, especially if the business grows, a PBX phone system is best. It is easily customizable and upgraded whenever necessary. Some features of the PBX phone system include auto-attendant, conferencing, music on hold, dial by name or extension and voicemail. There are also many other advanced features available that makes these types of systems appealing for larger businesses such as computer-telephone integration (CTI), hunt groups, conditional forwarding and more.

A KSU phone system, also known as a key system, involves one central switchboard that connects all the phones together and disburses the features of the system to each one. Users can manually control and direct incoming calls rather than it automatically happening when using a PBX phone system. A KSU phone system is less expensive than a PBX system and is typically used by small to medium size businesses. However, some businesses that may consider a KSU system often opt for a PBX because they expect large growth in the near future and prefer the more customizable features of a PBX.

KSU phone systems offer many standard phone features including interoffice dialing and line blocking to stop users from picking up a line that is already in use. The KSU system, however, does not offer as many features as the PBX which is why it is a good fit for smaller businesses that require fewer features.

A KSU-less phone system is the least expensive of the phone systems and offers the least features. It is typically used by small businesses that don’t foresee a large growing spurt in the future because this system is not easily upgraded. The lines are individual and not controlled by one central unit. It is less expensive than a KSU or PBX phone system making it an excellent candidate for small businesses. The KSU-less system is not easily compatible with KSU or PBX systems so it is important to determine your future growth needs before investing in this type of system.

Before you buy a new phone system for your company, make sure you evaluate your current and future needs. Talk with your phone installer to learn more about these systems and find out which features you need for your company.
